State Advocacy Office Assistant

DEPARTMENT: Public Policy and Advocacy (Washington, DC)

REPORTS TO: Senior Manager of State Advocacy

POSITION SUMMARY -  Responsible for providing support to the Senior Manager of State Advocacy (SMSA) to fulfill objectives of the AFSP Strategic Plan to align National and Chapter  suicide prevention agenda and initiatives, as well as promote suicide prevention funding and policies at the national and state level.  Assist in growing and maintaining the AFSP Field Advocate program. Assist in support of overall Public Policy Office operation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain state and local policy resource databases, to include state policy projects, Chapter Public Policy Council chairs and members, state legislative session calendars
  • Respond to and field internal and external Field Advocate program inquiries
  • Support SMSA in tracking and reporting on Field Advocate program recruitment and attrition and in maintaining ENGAGE database
  • Monitor state legislative activity, report potential action areas, and draft action alerts as directed by SMSA
  • Support SMSA in disseminating and regularly updating toolkits for Chapters and Field Advocates
  • Assist in the planning, coordination and execution of State Capitol Day events
  • Update state policy section within the Advocacy & Public Policy webpage
  • Assist Public Policy Team in the planning, coordination and execution of AFSP’s annual Advocacy Forum
  • Specific office support and administrative functions

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE SKILL REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a similar position preferably with a national nonprofit organization
  • Superior organization, verbal and writing skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills for communicating with AFSP Field Advocates and other volunteer and staff leaders
  • Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment with strong attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 2010 and other organization management software like ENGAGE
  • Familiarity with and or ability to learn office equipment, IT, phone operations, and other technical support functions, support options to maintain operations

Arizona Area Director

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) seeks qualified candidate for the position of Area Director for Arizona. The Area Director is responsible for organizing and implementing the Chapter’s signature Out of the Darkness walks and other fundraising, board development and programmatic activities throughout the state. Specific responsibilities include recruiting, organizing, and supervising volunteers for local events, attending to logistical details, securing sponsorships, supervising the actual events, and financial oversight. Position will work out of a home office and must be willing to travel throughout the state.

Qualifications

Five Years of experience with a demonstrated track record of conducting financially successful fundraising events in a national nonprofit organization, preferably a health-related organization with chapters. Demonstrated skills in volunteer recruitment and development and budgeting and planning. Bachelor’s degree with strong interpersonal and communications skills required.  Experience as a staff person working with nonprofit Boards preferred.

Metro Atlanta Associate Area Director (Part Time)

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) seeks qualified candidate for the position of Associate Area Director for Metro Atlanta.

This part time position (20 hours per week) is responsible for organizing and implementing the fundraising events, securing sponsorships, and grant writing throughout Georgia.

Specific responsibilities include recruiting, organizing, and supervising volunteers for local events, attending to logistical details, securing sponsorships, supervising the actual events, and volunteer recruitment. Position will work out of a home office and must be willing to travel throughout the chapter service area.

Qualifications

Experience running events in a national nonprofit organization, preferably a health-related organization with chapters. Demonstrated skills in volunteer organization and development, budgeting and planning, and special events fund raising. Bachelor’s degree with strong interpersonal and communications skills required.

Eastern Massachusetts Area Director

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Boston Chapter seeks qualified candidate for the position of Area Director for Eastern MA. The Area Director is responsible for organizing and implementing the Chapter’s signature Out of the Darkness walks and other fundraising, board development and programmatic activities throughout the state. Specific responsibilities include financial oversight including annual budgets and goals, recruiting, organizing, and supervising volunteers for local events, attending to logistical details, securing sponsorships, and supervising the actual events. Territory will include all cities towns in Eastern MA including Sturbridge, Central MA, North Shore, South Shore, Cape and Islands. Area Director will also oversee a part time staff person, Boston Chapter Coordinator. Position will be based in Eastern MA working out of a home office and must be willing to travel throughout Eastern MA.

Qualifications

3-5 years proven event fundraising track record at a national nonprofit organization. Demonstrated skills in special event fundraising including walks, galas and sports fundraising.  Experience in volunteer management, budgeting and program delivery. Experience as a staff person working with nonprofit Boards preferred. Bachelor’s degree with strong interpersonal and communications skills required.

North Dakota and South Dakota Area Director (Part Time)

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) seeks qualified candidate for the position of part-time Area Director for North Dakota and South Dakota (20 hours a week). The Area Director is responsible for all fundraising in ND and SD, as well as chapter development and programmatic activities throughout both states. Specific responsibilities include recruiting, organizing, and supervising volunteers for local fundraising events, attending to logistical details, securing sponsorships, supervising the actual events, and financial oversight. Position will be based in Fargo and work out of home office.  A small office space is available in Fargo for storage and meetings.

Qualifications

Proven track record supervising fundraising events at a national nonprofit organization, preferably walks or other related events.  Demonstrated skills in special event fundraising, volunteer management, budgeting and planning. Bachelor’s degree with strong interpersonal and communications skills required.  Experience as a staff person working with nonprofit Boards preferred.
