WebinarState Advocacy Toolbox 2012

Date: Tuesday, November 27, 2012

Description: Advocates and volunteers can have significant influence in public policy by interacting with their elected officials at the state level.  This review of state advocacy basics will discuss how a state bill becomes law, provide instruction on how to search for a state bill, and highlight differences between the state and federal legislative processes.  This webinar will also discuss relationship-building with your state elected officials and review other state advocacy efforts, including planning a visit to your state capital, recruiting field advocates, building collaborative relationships, reaching out to the media, and connecting others with community resources.

WebinarAFSP and SPRC Present, "Health Professional Training in Suicide Prevention: Legislative Innovation in Washington State"

Date: July 19, 2012

Description: Connecting suicidal individuals with quality mental health services plays a critical role in preventing suicide deaths.  Unfortunately, many mental health professionals are not adequately trained on how to assess, treat, and manage suicidal clients, despite the fact that these professionals are often on the “front line” in assessing and treating at-risk individuals.

This webinar highlights the work of community stakeholders who have been active participants in the movement to move the Matt Adler Suicide Assessment, Treatment, and Management Training Act of 2012 forward in Washington State, which now requires suicide prevention training for mental health and other professionals.  These stakeholders will share what the new law requires, how they became involved in the legislative process, how they solicited community input and support, successes and challenges they faced, and plans for the new law’s implementation. This webinar also gives guidance to others who may be interested in bringing similar legislation to their own state lawmakers.
