Chairman Tom Harkin (D-IA) held a meeting today of all Labor-HHS stakeholders.
The meeting focussed on what the budget conference means for Labor-HHS programs and what he will be doing over the next 3 weeks to highlight the impact of sequestration cuts on the programs in this bill. Senator Harkin feels strongly that any deal to replace sequestration cuts must treat non-defense and defense spending equally. For that reason, he believes it is absolutely critical that we focus public attention now on how Labor-HHS programs are faring under sequestration.
AFSP appreciates Chairman Harkin's commitment to programs vital to people struggling with mental disorders or who may be at risk for suicide.
AFSP public policy staff will continue working with the committee to ensure resources are allocated at the highest possible level for people with mental disorders and may be at risk for suicide.
