Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee Hold Hearing on Mental Health Treatment Options and Trends

On Tuesday, February 25, 2014 Chairman and Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Ranking Member Lamar Alexander (R-TN) of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee convened a hearing to examine treatment options for mental health conditions found in children and adolescents.

During the hearing, in conjunction with testimonies from a panel of witnesses, Senator Harkin highlighted the importance of early and appropriate diagnoses of mental illnesses in children and adolescents. Along with these early and proper diagnoses, the hearing emphasized the importance of “finding the right treatment for the right child.” The proper treatment could include psychotropic drugs, behavioral therapy, or a combination of treatments.

In order to find the most appropriate treatment, medical professionals and mental health professionals need to be connected, and trained in the early warning signs of mental illness.
