The Excellence in Mental Health Act is Passed

It is official; the Excellence in Mental Health Act has now been signed into law! Having been passed by both the Senate and House of Representatives, the final legislation was signed by President Obama on April 1st, 2014. The passage of this bill is a resounding victory for all Americans who may one day need to seek treatment for their mental health needs. The act notably seeks to establish improved mental health infrastructure and behavioral health services in a two year pilot program beginning in eight states.

AFSP is among the many valuable organizations who have dedicated themselves in recent months to advocating for the passage of this important legislation. Although the journey from passage to full implementation will not be simple or quick, AFSP will continue its diligent efforts in helping to advocate for and assess this critical law throughout its maturation. It is our goal that one day every American will be able to receive world-class medical health treatment to address every individual’s specifics needs. With this victory we are now one step closer in our walk out of the darkness, and that is something truly worth celebrating.
