Interning with AFSP has been such an amazing experience and I feel so fortunate to have worked here. From day one John, Trevor, and Nicole were extremely welcoming and friendly. I immediately felt at home here and this made for a great experience from the beginning. I came to AFSP as a recent college graduate with a degree in political science. I was excited about getting to live and work in our nation’s capital, and gain real world experience in public policy.
The responsibilities given to the public policy associates are what most interns dream of doing. The first week we attended congressional committee hearings, did write-ups for the website, attended press conferences and started semester long research projects. After my first week I updated my parents on all I had done. They told me internships are rarely like this, and how fortunate I was to be a part of one where I was trusted with so many tasks. This could not have been truer, and that is what made interning here so special and worthwhile. It was great to be immersed in so many different aspects of public policy, and I truly felt like I was part of the team here. I love that I was able to increase my understanding of our government and public policy, but more than that I learned so much about mental health policies and the continuous efforts by so many groups to help the mental health community.
In my four months here I absolutely gained invaluable, hands-on experience, and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone. John, Trevor, and Nicole were amazing leaders and mentors, and I learned more from them than I could have ever imagined when I first started here. I am excited to take all that I have learned and apply it to whatever future positions I may have.
