Albany, New York – March 12, 2014

AFSP Chapters from across New York State joined with the Mental Health Association in New York State (MHANYS) to hold this year’s Mental Health Matters Day.  Despite adverse weather conditions across the state, over 185 people joined us in Albany to discuss Mental Health Literacy with NYS elected officials.  We had a record 76 legislative visits scheduled and delivered informational packets to all NYS Senators and Assembly Members.  One of our legislative asks was to introduce a Senate same-as bill to Assemblyman Ortiz's bill A5870, which would require the Office of Mental Health to develop educational materials for educators regarding suicide prevention.  We are pleased to say that on March 20, Senator Espaillat introduced bill S6864 which is a companion bill to Assemblyman Ortiz's bill.  Certainly, our voices were heard.
