In order to standardize communications throughout the organization and field, each chapter receives their own AFSP.org chapter email address. It is recommend that the chapter board select one person who will be responsible for maintaining the mailbox and disseminating pertinent emails to the rest of the board. This email will often be the first point of contact between the public and the chapter and will be listed on the chapter's AFSP.org webpage.
As the chapters are volunteer run, it is understood there might be a delay in response because mailboxes are not checked every day. It is recommended that all chapters use an “automatic reply” to ensure anyone who inquires will responded to in a timely fashion. Two great examples from the Colorado and National Capital Chapters are below:
Thank you for your email. Please note that emails received by the AFSP Colorado Chapter are checked periodically. We will respond to your emails as quickly as possible.
Thank you for contacting the National Capital Area Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
As a volunteer-run organization, a response to your email may take several days. If you are in a crisis and need immediate assistance, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).Otherwise, someone with the Chapter will be in touch with you shortly.
If you need further information about the Chapter, please visit our webpage at www.afsp.org/ncac.
