First, make a list of possible legal advisors.
To get started, take the following steps:
• Ask family members, friends, other
advisors, and coworkers for recommendations.
• Ask a banker for referrals. Most
banks will give you the names of three lawyers who are experienced
in a legal specialty, such as estate settlement.
• The law is very state-specific.
If you need additional names, your local or state bar association
may be able to refer you to lawyers in your area who specialize
in the type of assistance you seek, such as employment issues or
estate settlement. Begin the process by looking in the phone directory
under “[Name of your city/county/state] Bar Association.”
If you cannot afford a lawyer, check with a
local legal clinic or legal aid office.
