Next Steps Planned on LGBT Initiative

Following a 2007 conference on suicide and suicide risk among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender populations, efforts are underway to widely disseminate conference findings through publication of a consensus statement and a series of educational presentations.

These presentations will provide accurate, up-to-date information about LGBT suicide and suicide risk factors to relevant target groups, including physicians, mental health professionals and educators, and will engage these groups in identifying needed changes in current practices and policies to reduce LGBT suicide risk.

Funding is also being sought for a national summit on preventing LGBT suicide, to be held in late 2009. The goal of the summit is to forge a broad coalition of leading suicide prevention and LGBT organizations, government, public and private philanthropic organizations and the media to develop a national “roadmap” for preventing LGBT suicide and reducing suicide risk.

The initial conference was sponsored by AFSP, the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association and the Suicide Prevention Resource Center. The project has been funded through a grant by the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation.
