Chapter News from Around the Country

Fall 2009


AFSP-Metro Atlanta

  • The Metro Atlanta chapter has been busy planning the Atlanta community walk and assisting with the Warner Robins and Augusta walk sites. The chapter has more sponsors than ever this year.
  • Work is still being done to bring the AFSP’s Interactive Screening Program to Georgia colleges.
  • Stay updated on all that the chapter does at www.afsp.org/atlanta and on the Metro Atlanta chapter Facebook page.

AFSP-Cincinnati

  • The chapter wants to congratulate their board chair, Debra Clancy, for participating in the panel for the National Survivors of Suicide Day broadcast.
  • The chapter is looking forward to their continued outreach to local university groups to share the AFSP film, The Truth about Suicide: Real Stories about Depression in College, and continued discussion on suicide prevention.
  • The chapter had a Cincinnati team participate in Chicago’s Overnight walk in June.
  • Spring fundraising events have included attending several bike rallies’ whose beer sales went to AFSP, bake sales and local coffee shop fundraisers.
  • An updated AFSP website, www.afsp.org/cincinnati, includes all of the chapter’s upcoming events in local happenings.
  • The chapter hosted their first “Lives Remembered, Lives Saved: Candlelight Vigil for Suicide Prevention” on Sept. 13 on Fountain Square.
  • The chapter will hold their first Nicholas Colson-Wright Memorial Car Show in Burke Park in Bethel, Ohio, on Sept. 20, with special appearances by MMA Fighters Roger Bowling and TJ Ball.
  • The chapter is working with local universities to set up Active Minds on Campus, and will have their fundraiser following their Out of the Darkness Community Walk on Oct. 4.
  • The chapter is forming a committee to work on National Survivors of Suicide Day events, which will be held at Receptions in Loveland, Ohio.
AFSP-Central Florida
 
  • AFSP-Central Florida celebrated their first year anniversary! 
  • New board members include Lt. Deanne Adams, Donna Beck, Myra Brazell, Tiffany Chapman and Wendy Cuomo. Sandy Hutto is the chapter’s new treasurer.
  • The chapter participated in the Heartland for Children Community Provider Day Resource Fair.
  • The chapter displayed resources at the Eastwood Community Fun Run and Health Fair in Orlando.
  • The chapter participated in the Entertainment Industries Council event titled, “Picture This: Mental Health Orlando.” Orlando is one of six cities nationwide to take part in this. 
  • Two student-driven initiatives took place in September at USF Polytechnic and Valencia Community College. Both included showing the AFSP college film, with a panel in place for discussion afterwards. Resources were also available for the students and other community attendees.
AFSP-Florida Southeast
 
  • More than 110 people had a wonderful time at the chapter’s IMPROV fundraiser at the Hard Rock Casino and Hotel in Hollywood. Dom Irrera, of late night television and comedy club fame, made everyone laugh until they cried; the food and drink were great; and the chapter raised over $1,100. The chapter hopes to bring more fun-filled fundraisers to Florida Southeast this year.
  • AFSP will hold its 11th Annual National Survivors of Suicide Day conference on Saturday, Nov. 21. The chapter’s conference will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the North Broward Medical Center at 201 E. Sample Road in Deerfield Beach. The cost is $15 per person, $25 per couple and $10 for each additional family member. The chapter’s keynote speaker is Dr. Michael Miles, professor of psychology at Palm Beach Community College.
  • The AFSP film, More Than Sad: Teen Depression, will be shown throughout Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ 126 middle and high schools. Miami-Dade is the fourth largest school district in the country. 
  • Planning is underway for the chapter’s annual awards luncheon. They are fortunate to have Lauren Daversa as luncheon chairperson. Lauren has a history of successful event planning for other organizations like the Chamber of Commerce. A hardworking luncheon committee will help Lauren make this another outstanding success. Volunteer to help Lauren make this a grand success.
  • AFSP-FLSE is becoming more technologically attuned to what is happening in cyberspace. They now have a chapter Facebook page and you can Twitter them, giving you more ways in to keep up with all that is happening at AFSP-FLSE. 
  • The chapter has three upcoming community walks: Oct. 24 (Palm Beach County), Nov. 14 (Miami-Dade County) and Nov. 22 (Broward County). Register today at OutOfTheDarkness.org and Walk! Walk! Walk!
