WELCOME to AFSP NEBRASKA!
The AFSP Nebraska Chapter has been underway since mid-2008 and now in 2009, we are online! Thanks to grass roots efforts provided by community volunteers we have had four successful fundraising “Out of the Darkness” walks in 2005-2008. We have also participated in the National Survivor Conference for the past 3 years (every November).
The Nebraska Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education, and awareness. We want to reach out to people with mental illness and those that are affected by suicide.
Over 30,000 people in the United States die by suicide every year. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death for adults between the ages of 18 and 65 years in the U.S. Every day, approximately 80 Americans take their own life, and 1,500 more attempt to do so. With each of these tragedies many people are profoundly affected and their lives are changed – these people are know as “Survivors of Suicide”.
We are based in the Omaha metro area, but hope to make a difference within the whole state of Nebraska. We can extend help to others throughout the state, and/or assist other areas of the state in starting a Chapter.
