WELCOME to AFSP NEBRASKA!
The AFSP Nebraska Chapter was formed in 2008 thanks to grass roots efforts provided by community volunteers. Prior to the chapter development, AFSP had it's first presence in Omaha, Nebraska in September 2005 when the first Out of the Darkness Community walk was held. In 2008 Beatrice joined in with their first walk and in 2010 Alliance brought the total to three community walks for the state of Nebraska. The community walks are beneficial in funding reseach and program development not only nationwide but right here in Nebraska.
The Nebraska Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education, and awareness. We want to reach out to people with mental illness and those that are affected by suicide.
Over 30,000 people in the United States die by suicide every year. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death for adults between the ages of 18 and 65 years in the U.S. Every day, approximately 80 Americans take their own life, and 1,500 more attempt to do so. With each of these tragedies many people are profoundly affected and their lives are forever changed – these people are know as “Survivors of Suicide”.
Though the Chapter is based in the Omaha metro area, in Nebraska we hold walks in Omaha, Beatrice and Alliance. Additionally there are survivor groups in Omaha and Beatrice and the National Survivor of Suicide Day Annual Conference is hosted in both Omaha and Kearney. In 2005 we began by hoping to make a difference in our state but now we can say "we are" making a difference and will continue to move forward in our efforts for our entire state!
