New York State's Capital Region Chapter of AFSP was formally chartered in May 2006.   Our Chapter serves the 14 counties which surround the beautiful Capital Region of New York State.

The Capital Region Chapter, nestled in the beauty of the Adirondacks and the bustle of the State Capitol, is one of the most historically exciting and culturally enriching areas of Upstate New York - from high-tech industries to rural open spaces. With this diversity, suicide is a statewide public health issue with regional variances. Sadly, one in every 25 lives lost to suicide in this country is a resident of New York State.

Since January 2006, the Capital Region Chapter has engaged in a careful strategic planning process that has included the thoughtful, well-planned formation of a diverse Board of Directors. Throughout this process we have gathered information and have a clearer idea of what AFSP is, what it does, and have examined our environment to focus attention on the crucial issues and challenges of suicide prevention and awareness work in the Capital Region of NYS. Our Board is committed to raising funds for suicide prevention research and educational programs, to working to erase the stigma surrounding suicide and its causes, to increasing advocacy efforts that continue to place suicide prevention at the forefront of legislative minds, and to encouraging those who are suffering from mental health issues to seek treatment.

The Chapter would like to thank Bob Gebbia and Mike Lamma for their belief and vision of successfully moving an AFSP presence into Upstate New York.   We’d also like to thank and recognize Mary Jean Coleman, our Upstate NY Regional Director, for her guidance and support.  Finally, we’d like to send a special thank you to all members of the Chapter, volunteers, Board members, and those who have participated in our events. Thank you for making our vision of a successful Chapter a reality.

Read on and see what we are working on here in the Capital Region. Thank you!
