Annual Report
This has been an encouraging year for suicide prevention -- one of great promise, but also a year of new challenges. With the release of data showing more than 33,000 annual suicide deaths in the United States, the suicide rate trending upward, the impact of the economy and a dramatic increase in suicide among military personnel, there is greater urgency than ever before to do more to prevent suicide.
Every 16 minutes in this country someone dies by suicide, leaving others to cope with this tragic loss of life. Research has shown that 90 percent of people who die by suicide have an underlying mental disorder at the time of their death, often unrecognized, and often untreated. Now more than ever, the suicide prevention movement needs leadership, financial resources, advocates, evidenced-based programs and must act quickly to turn innovative IDEAS INTO ACTION.
