Out of the Darkness Community Walks

Out of the Darkness Community Walks

The Out of the Darkness Community Walks are AFSP’s signature fundraising campaign.

Every fall, family members, friends, and colleagues walk 3–5 miles together in hundreds of communities across the nation to prevent suicide, raise awareness, and end the stigma that surrounds depression and other mental disorders.

With each stride, our walkers save lives, honor loved ones lost to suicide and raise funds to support AFSP’s vital mission.

Below are the walks being held in your state. For a complete list, click here.

2012 Walk Recap

2011 Walk Committee

The Alabama Out of the Darkness Community Walks have shown tremendous growth over the past few  years, thanks to Alabamians generosity.  In 2009, the total funds raised by the 3 Alabama walks totaled $100,374.  In 2012, the number of walks increased to 6 and over $200,000 was raised.  Last year, the Birmingham Walk was the 6th largest walk in the nation, out of over 250 walks!  The South Alabama Walk grew by 170% between 2011 and 2012, with participants increasing from 243 to 520, and funds raised increasing from $9,059 to $24,472!  The North Alabama Walk, the Tuscaloosa Walk and the Dothan Walk all continue to grow at extraordinary rates!  We are so thankful for our supporters generosity and dedication to the mission of AFSP.  It is the success of our Out of the Darkness Community Walks that allows the Alabama Chapter to continue to provide much needed research, education, awareness and survivor programs across the state.  Our efforts continue to be recognized nationally, as the Alabama Chapter has received the Education Award for the last 3 years, and the Chapter of the Year Award for the last 4 years.  None of this would be possible without the support of the many volunteers and participants who give of their time and resources to help us stop the loss of life by suicide.
