Study suggests genetic indicator to suicidal thoughts

If you missed our VP of Research, Jill Harkavy-Friedman, Ph.D., on the Today Show last week, you can watch the segment here. As Dr. Harkavy-Friedman said, suicide is complex and many factors affect a person’s risk, including biological, psychological and social factors, as well as access to lethal means. The Johns Hopkins study is part of an increasing body of research investigating genetics as a factor, helping to better assess long-term and immediate risk and to eventually reduce rates of suicide. Lastly, Dr. Harkavy-Friedman offered that this biomarker could help doctors determine a patient’s risk, but assessment still needs to be individually based.
