A Message from the Maryland Chapter Board Chair

Julie Matheny, Maryland Chapter Board Chair

Thank you for visiting the Maryland Chapter website of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Should you be visiting this website due to the loss of a friend or loved one, I am truly sorry for your loss.  AFSP is here to offer information, resources and/or support to help you in your process of healing.

If you are visiting this website because you are struggling personally, please seek medical help or call 1-800-273-TALK (8255), and know you are loved and cared about by your family and friends.

At the time of my father’s death, there were no resources like AFSP available and suicide was not talked about.  When I learned more about AFSP in 2009, it became a journey of purpose for me, and now to the Maryland Chapter Board Chair.

Our chapter is comprised of amazing volunteers whose dedication and commitment has allowed us to grow tremendously and expand our reach throughout the state.  In 2013, the Maryland Chapter expanded their community and campus walks from only 4 walks raising $76,000 to 9 walks raising over $350,000.  The Party for Life Annual Crabfeast is in its fourth year and becomes more and more successful each year.

The funds provided by our walks and Chapter fundraisers allow us to provide many important suicide prevention and intervention resources.  Our focus for 2014 will be to expand these programs across the state.

The Maryland Chapter is active in education and awareness events ranging from the B’More Healthy Expo to Maryland’s Annual Suicide Prevention Conference.  The More than Sad program for students and school personnel has been provided to several counties in the state and we are hopeful to expand to more public and private schools in 2014.

The Survivors Outreach Program has more than 20 trained survivors serving all counties.  Other Survivor Initiatives include The International Survivor of Suicide Days which was held in three locations in 2013 and the Chapter Lifekeepers quilt honoring our volunteer loved ones lost to suicide.

We invite you to join us on Facebook, www.facebook.com/AFSPmaryland, twitter, @afspmaryland, and instagram, @afspmaryland to follow our Chapter events.

We are dedicated to moving the mission of AFSP forward.  Everything we do is made possible thanks to our dedicated volunteers and the generous support of the community. Thank you to everyone whose support helps our chapter continue to thrive.  We can make a difference in reducing the stigma, educating others and offering support and resources to those in need.  Please join us today by walking, volunteering, or attending one of our events to help build a world without suicide.
