More than 450 people participated in the Out of the Darkness Walk held October 20, at Memphis Botanic Garden. The event is held each year to raise funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). The number of participants was up by at least 100 over last year. Joe Birch, local WMC TV 5 news anchor, acted as master of ceremonies and Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell was also present and offered a greeting to walkers. Bluegrass band, Sorghum Hill performed to the crowd prior to and after the Walk. A highlight of the annual event was the dove release.
Over 250 communities across the United States participate in the Walk each year, bringing awareness to suicide and depression prevention.
The 2013 Memphis/Mid-South Walk will be Saturday, October 19.
