Our AFSP-Metro Atlanta chapter has an active board of directors with much talent. We also have committees that these board members serve on where we need volunteer help.
Advocacy (Chair: Gregg Graham): Influences public policy and legislation as it relates to suicide prevention on the local and national levels. Forms relationships with government officials, encourages grassroots participation and keeps the board updated on legislative priorities through frequent communication. Works closely with the National office to ensure the Metro Atlanta chapter is informed of legislative priorities, talking points and advocacy trends in suicide prevention.
Development (Chair: OPEN):Oversees the chapter's non-walk fundraising and development activities including benefit dinners and spring fundraiser. It assists in the development of annual fundraising goals, solicits corporate event sponsorships, secures auction items and encourages donor participation/attendance. The Development Committee is the board's central source of information about the fundraising climate and the status of fundraising activities.
Education & Outreach (Chair: Dorian Lamis): Implements AFSP educational and outreach activities locally including presentations, dispersal of DVDs and brochures, tabling events, Survivor Outreach Program, etc. Plans and executes yearly Research Town Hall Meeting, Suicide Prevention Week and International Survivors of Suicide Day. The Education and Outreach Committee keeps the board informed of suicide prevention trends and scientific research through frequent communication and brief quarterly updates to be presented at each board meeting.
Out of the Darkness Community Walk (Chair: Anna Ruth Williams):Oversees all event planning surrounding the chapter’s annual signature fundraising event, which is held each fall. Assists in goal planning and post-event evaluation. Recruits corporate sponsorships, team participation and in-kind donors. Develops a program for the opening and closing ceremonies, recruits honorary co-chair(s) and implements ancillary activities (i.e., photo booth, survivor area). Works closely with the area director, public relations committee and volunteer committee during the months leading up to this annual event.
Public Relations (Chair: Anna Ruth Williams):Raises awareness of AFSP’s mission and the local chapter’s presence through proactive public relations, social media and marketing efforts. Supports all chapters by communicating key messages, encouraging event participation and rallying support using traditional and new media channels. Designs chapter emails, event flyers/posters, posts social media status updates, drafts and distributes press releases, etc.
Volunteer (Chair: Kim DePriest):Oversees volunteer recruitment, management and relationship building. Supports all chapter events by providing needed volunteers and tracking participation. Recruits volunteers from at-risk populations (i.e., teens, LGBT, military and elderly) and from the survivor community. Manages a database of volunteer contact information, interests and availability in close coordination with the area director.
