Welcome. We are the Nebraska chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
The grassroots work we do focuses on eliminating the loss of life from suicide by: delivering innovative prevention programs, educating the public about risk factors and warning signs, raising funds for suicide research and programs, and reaching out to those individuals who have lost someone to suicide.
As a part of AFSP’s growing nationwide network of chapters, we bring together people from all backgrounds who want to prevent suicide in our communities. Families and friends who have lost someone to suicide, vulnerable individuals, mental health professionals, clergy, educators, students, community/business leaders, and many others energize our chapter.
The AFSP Nebraska Chapter was formed in 2008 thanks to grass roots efforts provided by community volunteers. Prior to the chapter development, AFSP had it's first presence in Omaha, Nebraska in October 2005 when the first Out of the Darkness Community walk was held. In 2008 Beatrice joined in with their first walk and in 2010 Alliance had their first walk, North Platte joined in 2011, Scottsbluff in 2012 and just this year Sidney joined making a total of six community walks for the state of Nebraska. The community walks are beneficial in funding research and program development.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education, and awareness. We want to reach out to people with mental illness and those that are affected by suicide.
Goals for the Nebraska Chapter:
- Help survivors of suicide
- Educate and bring awareness programs to Nebraska in regards to suicide prevention and mental illness
In 2011, 39,518 suicides were reported. In that year, someone in the country died by suicide every 13.3 minutes, making suicide the 10th leading cause of death. With each of these tragedies many people are profoundly affected and their lives are forever changed – these people are know as “Survivors of Suicide”.
Though the Chapter is based in the Omaha metro area, in Nebraska we hold walks in Omaha, Beatrice, Alliance, Scottsbluff, North Platte and Sidney. Additionally there are survivor groups in Omaha and Beatrice. The International Survivor of Suicide Loss Day Annual Conference is hosted in Omaha and Lincoln. It is held annually on the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
In 2005 we began with "hope" in making a difference in our state but now "we are" making a difference! With our increased volunteers statewide we can impact more lives in our state as we continue with the goals we set out and the goals of AFSP!
