Get Involved

Through the contribution of their time, talent, and passion, our volunteers are leading the movement to prevent suicide in local communities across the nation.

They are the driving force behind increasing the public’s awareness of suicide as a public health issue that is preventable. Together, our chapter volunteers deliver innovative prevention programs for schools and business, reach out to survivors of suicide loss, organize fundraising events, and act as a go-to resource for their entire community.

Whatever your background, strengths, or interests, our chapter needs you. Let’s make a difference in the lives of those who have been touched by suicide in our community. Please join us today.

We can't do this without you ...

OUT OF THE DARKNESS WALK today!

The success of AFSP’s Out of the Darkness Walk is directly related to the wonderful volunteers who dedicate their time to our Chapter. We welcome volunteers of all ages, abilities and talents to assist with a variety of volunteer opportunities. There is only one requirement ~ a desire to help us create a world without suicide!

Check out these Out of the Darkness Walk Volunteer Opportunities!

Spread the Word:In the weeks leading up to the Walk we will provide volunteers with Out of the Darkness posters and brochures to distribute around their community.

The Go Getters:You know who you are!  Not bashful about approaching potential sponsors. You will gladly ask local businesses and companies for a monetary contribution or donations of product (water, granola bars, fruit, pizza, etc.)

Route Markers:Volunteers are provided with a detailed map of the walk route as well as directional signs/arrows, tape & string.  Route markers are asked to use these supplies (and their good judgment) to mark the route for our participants.

Registration Volunteers: Registration volunteers are some of the first faces our walkers see!  Volunteers assist in event set-up, participant check-in, collect donation envelopes, register walk-on participants, and hand out T-shirts.

Meeters & Greeters: Meeters & Greeters bring the mission to our Walks! Volunteers circulate through the crowd to welcome and direct event participants and thank people for participating.

Share a Smile Volunteer: Volunteers assist with various tasks at the Out of the Darkness start/finish and along the route, which includes congratulating, thanking and cheering for our walkers and also the set-up and distribution of refreshments (varies by site).

Entertainers: Got a special talent? Share your skills with Out of the Darkness Walk participants to make it a memorable experience for all! We're looking for musicians, DJs, face painters, magicians, clowns, balloon artists, and more to donate their time and talent.

Photographers: Say cheese!   Using your own equipment, you will take team photos, start and finish photos, and route and celebration photos.

It’s a Wrap: What goes up must come down!   After the Out of the Darkness Walk we rely on volunteers to remove all of our route markers and banners and assist in the general event breakdown.

Teaming up for a world WITHOUT SUICIDE!

Did you know that you can create your own volunteer team?

Volunteering is just more fun when you're part of a team!  Gather your co-workers, your friends, and family and create a volunteer team to enjoy the event together. Volunteer teams are also a great opportunity to get your school, club or organization involved together.
