Development of a Manual for Patients with Schizophrenia and Suicidality
Abstract: This project aims to develop and test the usefulness of a recovery manual designed to be used by patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder and a recent suicide attempt as a supplement to clinical treatment. The 30-50 page manual, to be developed in conjunction with a panel of experts in the treatment of schizophrenia, will contain educational information that encourages active participation in treatment, clinical vignettes and workbook sections with questions designed to stimulate patients’ thinking about their own experiences and their communications with care providers. The draft manual will be piloted with 35 outpatients, who will be assessed for depression, suicidal ideation and other symptoms before and after completing the modules. Patients will also participate in focus groups to provide feedback on their experiences with the manual. The investigators will use these results to prepare a final version of the manual, which will subsequently be tested in a larger study. It is anticipated that it will ultimately serve as an effective enhancement to outpatient treatment of suicidal patients with schizophrenia.
