Determining the Effects of Early Alcohol Use on Suicide Attempts in Early Adolescence Through Young Adolescence

Abstract: This study will investigate the impact of alcohol use before the age of 13 on suicide attempts during both adolescence and young adulthood, using data from three waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). It will also seek to identify factors at the individual, family, peer or neighborhood level that may influence the link between early alcohol use and suicide attempts. The investigators will classify factors as independent, mediating, moderating, overlapping or proxy, and will develop statistical models that identify the various pathways between early alcohol use and suicide attempts. They expect that study results will be useful as a guide to teen alcohol use policies, and also to pediatricians who are in a position to promote early identification of youth at risk for early alcohol initiation.
