Suicide Risk and the Danish Criminal Justice System: A Nested Case-Control Study

Abstract: Danish national registers provide a unique resource for conducting truly population-based investigations of the association of suicide to a wide range of demographic, clinical and psychosocial variables. In this study, the investigators will examine several linked registers across the period 1981-2006 to determine whether people having various levels of exposure to the Danish Criminal Justice System have elevated psychiatric histories and elevated suicide risk compared to the population at large. Specific groups to be investigated include those who have been charged with a crime but not yet convicted, tried but found not guilty, convicted and fined rather than imprisoned, convicted and served a custodial sentence of varying lengths, released from prison, etc. The study will enhance understanding of the relationship of forensic variables to suicide risk, and will assist clinicians and service planners in developing appropriate suicide prevention strategies for different subgroups in this overall high-risk population.
