A Prospective Study of the Relationship between Non-Suicidal Self-Injury and Suicidal Behavior in a College Population

Abstract: This longitudinal study investigates the relationship between non-suicidal self-injury and suicidal ideation, plan, gesture and attempt in 1,647 college students drawn from six universities. Detailed information on prevalence, risk and protective factors for both suicidal behavior and non-suicidal self-injury will be collected. Wave II data collection is currently underway and is dedicated to examining the temporal relationship between NSSI and suicidality. This grant provides funding to extend the study by adding wave III to better understand mediation, trajectories, and non-linear patterns. Understanding the extent to which NSSI directly contributes to later development of suicidality, independent of common risk factors, is particularly important because direct effects would suggest that early intervention is warranted, even in cases which appear to have low clinical relevance.
