Development of a Brief Psychological Autopsy Instrument to Improve the Accuracy of Injury Death Reporting in China
Abstract: This study will identify the primary causes for missing and misclassified suicide deaths in Sichuan, China, and develop and pilot a brief psychological autopsy questionnaire based on this information that will be used by the personnel who complete death certificates to improve the accuracy and reliability of their classification of injury deaths. This AFSP-funded Pilot Project will identify the primary causes of missing and misclassified injury deaths in China, information that can be used to adjust unreliable official rates of suicide and, thus, provide a more accurate picture of the pattern of suicides in the country. The study will pilot test a method for reducing the problem of missing and misclassified suicide deaths that will be revised and rigorously assessed in a future large-scale study and subsequently employed in future studies of the effectiveness of different suicide prevention strategies.
