Through the contribution of their time, talent, and passion, our volunteers are leading the movement to prevent suicide in local communities across the nation.
They are the driving force behind increasing the public’s awareness of suicide as a public health issue that is preventable. Together, our chapter volunteers deliver innovative prevention programs for schools and business, reach out to survivors of suicide loss, organize fundraising events, and act as a go-to resource for their entire community.
Whatever your background, strengths, or interests, our chapter needs you. Let’s make a difference in the lives of those who have been touched by suicide in our community. Please join us today.
As part of its mission, AFSP continues efforts to create and implement strategies for suicide prevention on the national, state and community levels. But we cannot do this alone: social change can only occur if it is driven by the collective action of individuals and communities across the nation. AFSP’s Field Advocate Program seeks to inspire others to raise their community’s awareness about suicide and help spread the word that prevention is possible
AFSP is increasing awareness about prevention, warning signs and the psychiatric illnesses most often responsible for suicide. This vital information has been disseminated to community groups, educators, parents, students and concerned individuals. AFSP has also expanded its efforts to disseminate the latest advances in suicide prevention research and to reduce the stigma associated with suicide. AFSP's projects educate physicians, mental health professionals, gatekeepers and the media to help them better understand, identify and bring to treatment depressed and suicidal individuals.
Third Party Fundraising:
Ever thought of getting your friends together to host an event to benefit the suicide prevention? Chairing an event to raise awareness and funds for research and education can be one of the most rewarding experiences in your life. Volunteers in our chapter have developed everything from golf tournaments to bowling events to parties - all in an effort to advance our mission.
Work in the marketing or public relations field? Have a knack for increasing people's knowledge of programs or the mission of an organization? Well then we could use your help! There are many opportunities to help market the survivor programs and fundraising opportunities.
2013 Out of the Darkness Walk Committee:
We are looking for motivated volunteers to commit time and energy to our 2013 Out of the Darkness Walk. We are excited to be holding our 8th Annual Greater Houston Area Walk and are anticipating over 1,000 participants this year! The bigger the event grows, the more need there is for friendly volunteers to help with the day of, and people to help to make this event a success. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer either for the day of activities or for the planning of the event, please let us know.
